Sri Lanka is a tropical paradise, known for its lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and breathtaking waterfalls. With its majestic drop of 263 meters (863 feet), Bambarakanda is not only a remarkable geographical feature but also a favourite destination for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers alike.

Location and Accessibility

Bambarakanda Falls is situated in the Kalupahana area, nestled within the Badulla District of the Central Highlands. It is about 5 kilometres away from the Colombo-Badulla main road, and visitors can easily access the site from either the nearby towns of Haputale or Kalupahana. The fall is located in the heart of the Uva Province, surrounded by verdant pine forests and rolling hills. Its relatively remote location offers a tranquil escape from the bustling urban areas, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in nature's tranquillity.

 The best time to visit Bambarakanda is during the rainy season, from October to March when the water flow is at its peak. However, even in the dry season, the sight of the slender stream cascading down the rocky cliffs is awe-inspiring.

The Waterfall’s Splendor

Bambarakanda Falls originates from the Kuda Oya, a tributary of the Walawe River. The water tumbles down from a steep cliff, forming a thin ribbon that gracefully descends into a natural pool at the base. The waterfall’s height makes it a striking sight, and its surroundings only add to its charm. Tall pine trees frame the scene, and mist often shrouds the area, creating a mystical atmosphere. The sight of the water cascading from such an incredible height is both humbling and captivating.

 The journey to the waterfall itself is an adventure. After reaching the base, a short hike leads you through scenic landscapes and winding paths to a viewpoint that offers an unobstructed view of the falls. For the more adventurous, a trail leads to the top of the waterfall, providing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Besides marvelling at the waterfall, visitors can engage in a variety of activities around Bambarakanda. Hiking is a popular choice, with several trails that lead through the surrounding forests and hills. The Bambarakanda Nature Trail is particularly well-known, offering a moderate hike that rewards trekkers with views of several smaller waterfalls and natural pools. This trail is also ideal for birdwatchers, as the region is home to a variety of bird species, including the Sri Lankan Junglefowl and many species of endemic butterflies.

 For those interested in camping, the area around the falls provides an excellent spot for setting up tents. The cool mountain air, combined with the sounds of the waterfall in the background, makes for an unforgettable outdoor experience.

 Nearby attractions include the Horton Plains National Park, which is about an hour’s drive from Bambarakanda. Famous for its World’s End viewpoint and Baker’s Falls, Horton Plains is a must-visit for anyone in the region. Additionally, the picturesque town of Haputale offers tea plantations, colonial architecture, and breathtaking views over the southern plains.
